Guru Sutapa Talukdar, student of Odissi legend, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, is a celebrated name in Odissi. She has been awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution in Indian classical dance. She has received great appreciation both as solo performer and for her choreographies. Her hallmark is a blend of the experimental and the pure form. Guru Talukdar is also a passionate social reformist.
Established on 4th January, 1987 by Guru Sutapa Talukdar, Gurukul is an Odissi centre for excellence. Gurukul’s curriculum includes a balance of technique, drama, pureness of heritage, and experimental approaches. It has a robust collection of productions to its name, most of which have received international fame. Each production has been enriched by stalwarts in the field of music, vocals, script and light. Today, Gurukul students are spread across the world, many of whom are well-known performers and admired teachers.
For more than a decade, Gurukul has been an avid pursuant of philanthropy. Based on the belief, ‘dance as education’, Gurukul has collaborated with patrons to bring meaningful change into the lives of many underprivileged students.
